Carrum Downs Secondary College
The primary goal of this project was to design a school that embodied the aspirations and needs of the Carrum Downs community. The multi-use facilities were designed and located to provide for ease of expansion in the future. This was achieved through the careful design of rooflines, floor heights and cladding materiality. The performance space in the new arts facility fulfils a pressing social need in the community, embodying the heart of the displaced suburb. The design maximises the potential for the community’s use of multi-use areas and the possible expansion by the school and the Carrum Downs’ residents. The design explored the educational philosophy of viewing information as an extension of core curriculum teaching, not a distinct learning area. It is an extension of reading and writing, a sound basis in information technology skills as in the traditional areas of literacy, combined with highly flexible provision for future educational directions. To facilitate this development, we envisaged the provision of a variety of models for delivery that encompass all existing technology and allow for future possibilities.
